Saint Thecla:
A Witness and Martyr for Christ
Saint Thecla, one of the earliest saints of the Church and a follower of St. Paul the Apostle, is celebrated on September 24th each year.
The icon places Thecla at the center. On the left, we see two apostles, St. Paul and St. Barnabas, companions in spreading the Gospel. Around 45 AD, Paul passed through the city of Iconium, preaching the Gospel. Thecla listened to his words and sermons, believed in Christ, and faithfully and generously continued her journey of faith.
On the right side of the icon, a large furnace symbolizes the tortures and persecutions Thecla endured. After she declared her faith and refused to marry, desiring to dedicate her virginity to Christ, her family tried to dissuade her by all means. When gentle persuasion failed, they resorted to torture and starvation. Her mother, enraged, sought her death and took her to the city governor. The governor tried in every way to turn her from her faith, but faced with her solid will and unwavering resolve, he threatened to throw her alive into a blazing fire. Unconcerned, she was cast into the raging furnace, but God sent a heavy rain that extinguished the flames, and Thecla emerged unharmed.
Afterward, Thecla fled the city and followed the Apostle Paul, accompanying him to Antioch.
At the feet of the saint, we see the instruments of torture, which bear witness to God’s care for Thecla and the futility of her persecutors’ schemes. In Antioch, Thecla faced a second attempt at martyrdom. When the governor learned of her Christian faith, he sentenced her to death and had her thrown to wild beasts, yet all attempts to kill her failed. Astonished, the governor asked her, “Who are you and what is this power at work in you?” Thecla replied, “I am a servant of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. He alone is the way, the truth, and the life, and the salvation of all who hope in Him.” With that, she was set free.
In the background, flowing water first symbolizes the water of baptism that flowed over Thecla’s head, cementing her faith to the point of death. It also represents the crowds that flocked to her cave in Maaloula, seeking grace, healing, and conversion at her hand. This angered some doctors whose patients she was healing. They believed Thecla’s miracles were a form of magic linked to her virginity and sent men to defile her. However, her prayers were answered, and she escaped into a cleft in the rocks that split open to protect her. The rocks became her hiding place and, around 90 AD, her burial place. The mountains in the icon symbolize the power of God, which was revealed in the mountains of Maaloula, where His glory, care, and the crowning of the righteous with the wreath of sanctity were made manifest.

الشهيدة والشاهدة للمسيح
القديسة تقلا، هي إحدى قديسات الكنيسة الأولى ومن أتباع القديس بولس الرسول، تحتفل الكنيسة بعيدها يوم ٢٤ أيلول من كلّ سنة.
تتوسط تقلا الإيقونة، ونرى في الجهة اليسرى رسولين: هما القديس بولس والقديس برنابا، رفيقا البشاره. لقد مرّ بولس بمدينة إيقونية نحو عام ٤٥ ميلادي مُبشـرًا بالإنجيل، و أصغت تقلا لكلامه وعظاته، فآمنت بالمسيح، وتابعت مسيرتها الإيمانيّة بأمانةً وسخاء.
من الجهة اليمنى من الإيقونة، يبدو آتون النار كبيرًا، ليرمز للعذابات والاضطهادات التي عانتها تقلا بعد أن أعلنت إيمانها أمام أهلها، رافضةً الزواج، لأنها تريد أن تنذز بتوليّتها للمسيح، فحاول أهلُها ثنيها عن عزمها بجميع الوسائل لكن دون جدوى من الكلام الحسن، فلجأوا إلى التعذيب وحرمانها من الطعام. إلى أن غضبت والدتها بشدّة ورغبت بقتلها، فاصطحبتها إلى والي المدينة الذي حاول بكل الطرق الممكنة أن يردّها عن إيمانها، وأمام إرادتها الصلبة وعزمها الثابت. هدّدها برميها حيّة في النار فلم تأبه، فألقاها في أتون نارٍ مضطرمة، لكنّ الله أرسل أمطارًا غزيرة أطفأت نار الأتون وخرجت تقلا سالمة من كل أذى.
وبعدها هربت تقلا من المدينة وتبعت الرسول بولس، ثم رافقته إلى مدينة أنطاكية…
عند قديمي القديسة، نرى أدوات التعذيب التي تشهد لعناية الله بتقلا ولانهزام حيل المضطهدين: ففي أنطاكية، واجهت تقلا محاولة الاستشهاد الثانية، بعد علم الوالي بإيمانها المسيحيّ، حكم عليها بالموت، وألقاها للوحوش التي تمسّها بأذى… وباءت جميع محاولاته لقتلها بالفشل. إذ ذاك تعجب الوالي جدًا وسألها : “من أنتِ وما هي هذه القوة الفاعلة فيك؟ !”
فأجابت تقلا : “أنا عبدة يسوع المسيح ابن الله الحيّ. هو وحده الطريق والحقّ والحياة وخلاص من يرجونه”، فأطلق سراحها…
نرى في خلفية الإيقونة مياهًا تَنساب، لترمز أوّلاً إلى ماء المعموديّة الذي انساب على رأس تقلا، فالتزمت بإيمانها حتى الموت. وترمز ثانيًا إلى الجموع التي تدفّقت إلى مغارتها في معلولا، لتطلب النعم والشفاءات والارتداد على يدها، هذا ما لم يَرضَ بِهِ بعض الأطبّاء، لأنّها تشفي مرضاهم. فاعتقدوا بأن معجزات تقلا هي ضروب سحر مرتبط بعذريتها، فأرسلوا رجالاً ليسلبوا منها عذريتها، ولكنّ صلاتها كانت مستجابة، فهربت، ودخلت بين صخور كانت قد انشقّت لتحميها… فكانت تلك الصخور مَخبًأ لها ومدفنًا حوالى سنة ٩٠ م. وما الجبال في الإيقونة إلاّ رمز لقوّة الله التي تجلّت في جبال معلولا، فظهر مجده وعنايته وتكليله للأبرار بإكليل القداسة.
