The Icon of St. George, Patron of Beirut
Explanation of the Icon with Father Nicolas Akiki, OLM

The icon of Saint George depicts the valiant soldier who chose Christ as his leader and Lord. He fought against all pagan gods and their symbols and struggled in defense of the Church, the bride of Christ. For this, the people of Beirut chose him to be the patron saint of their city.

The icon is divided into three sections:

The Lower Section:

This is the sea of Beirut. The Holy Scriptures often use the symbol of the sea to denote death. The sea, like death, conceals secrets in its dark depths that people fear and strive to discover.

In the sea, there is a small boat, a symbol for every person sailing the sea of death, hoping to reach the harbor of salvation. It is filled with hope in the Teacher who rides in their boat, even if He is asleep, for a single word from Him calms the waves.

Also in the sea is a dragon, which symbolizes evil and those who harbor it. It is a symbol for anyone who does not choose Christ as king and lord over their life and homeland. The dragon’s feet are in the sea of death as it breathes fire to destroy the city that has chosen George, the soldier of Christ, as its patron.

Throughout its history, Beirut has witnessed natural disasters and wars that have destroyed it. The seven layers in the icon testify to what the city has endured over the centuries. In its present, the port of Beirut witnessed a deafening explosion that destroyed the city and resulted in hundreds of martyrs and injured.

From the port’s silos, wheat sprouts, watered by the blood of the martyrs, telling the story of the grain of wheat that fell and was buried in the earth to yield fruits of hope and faith in a homeland that will shake off the dust of death to remain a mountain of incense and perfume.

The dust will be shaken off through the coexistence of all its people from various denominations, symbolized by the Lebanese flag, which unites the bell tower of Saint George’s Church with the minaret of the Al-Amine Mosque, a testament to this hoped-for coexistence.

The dust will be shaken off by the love and harmony of the people of Beirut, whom the icon represents with the old and new houses of Beirut lined up side by side, remaining a witness to the history of a people who were stronger than the divisions and tensions of politics. A people who chose life despite the many signs of death around them.

The dust will be shaken off by its faith that it is a mountain of incense and frankincense… a mountain of prayer and saints… and no matter how towering the mountains of trials and difficulties, they become a path to reaching the glory of heaven when the pain of death and martyrdom meets the glory of the Resurrection and life. From the mountains of Lebanon, springs and rivers flow to quench the thirst of every soul and bring life to blossom around their streams, just as the word of God does to every soul thirsty for the water of life… so much so that it touches our death to overflow with life and resurrection.

If the dragon connects the sea of death to a land of misery, Saint George, through his intercession for Beirut, connects the earth to heaven, to intercede for Beirut and its inhabitants before God—He who conquered death by his death and gave us life.

The Upper Section:

The upper section is covered in gold, which symbolizes heaven. Saint George wears the color red, the symbol of martyrdom. In his hand, he holds the cross as a spear with which he fights evil, and he affirms that Beirut will remain under his protection and intercession, no matter how much the fires of evil dragons rage against it.
